About:

Good morning Starshine! The earth says: Hello!

Having recently chatted to some American exchange students around a camp fire whilst toasting sandwiches made up of marshmellows, left over braai meat, chocolate and banana (in true student fashion) I came to realise just how ignorant the world is to life in South Africa.
As a penniless (well, relatively) Rhodes student infected with the travel bug and a tent and two sleeping bags to my name I felt it was my duty to begin this journal in order to enlighten those of you around the world interested as to our true living conditions – to replace the ubiquitous picture of the starving Ethiopian child surrounded by rampant crime and backward cultures with that of a growing, vibrant and hospitable country ready to introduce you to the community vibe, breath-taking views and God’s best inventions: OumaRusks and braais!
From Cape Town to Knysna to Johannesburg to Kwa-Zulu Natal to the Drakensburg, South Africa is set up to steal not your money (although to be fair, there is still crime) but your heart.
Speaking of hearts,  for the starry-eyed among you there will be a guaranteed romantic element to my stories as the majority of my traveling experiences over the past five years have been shared with a special someone of the tall, dark and handsome persuasion (hereafter named Luke). For those of you looking to travel South Africa on a budget, realistic figures will be included to the best of my abilities. And finally to those of you who merely wish to partake in our beautiful country from the comfort of your home, Luke has an amazing aptitude when it comes to drool-worthy photography and Simon (another Rhodes student) takes great pride in not only capturing the moment on his beloved GoPro camera but tying it to a great soundtrack as well.
To my fellow South Africans – everyday is national Braai Day! To everyone else, here’s an open invitation to revel in the land I love with the people that make it worthwhile. Don’t be shy!

  1. Bean, this is beautiful!
My favourite part is that South Africa is not out to steal your money but steal your heart.

    Love this!
